So far in this NFL offseason, there have been coaches suspended, wide receivers signed to mega-blockbuster deals (by the Redskins, unsurprisingly enough), and at least one massive pre-draft trade (again, thank the Redskins). It was only a matter of time before things got really interesting, though.
That happened last week, when former Colt and future Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning made his version of LeBron’s “The Decision,” and headed to Denver to quarterback his hero John Elway’s old team. Elway is now a lead executive with the Broncos, and one can only imagine him and Manning cooperating very well in future seasons. Not that many seasons though; Peyton is 36 years old (yahoo.com).
Such a dramatic shake-up in Denver ought to be surprising to the sports world. The Broncos, after all, did win enough to secure their division title last season, beating a number of arguably better teams with magical fourth-quarter (or even later) comebacks and culminating with their defeat of the defending AFC Champion Steelers at Invesco Field. After a season like that, whoever started at quarterback for the Broncos should have felt safe in his position.
And yet, not only is Tim Tebow, who beat out old Denver starter Kyle Orton for the starting job mid-season, no longer Denver’s starter, he isn’t even with the team. The man who saved the team from a 1-4 start, scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime in his first start or the year, and bounced the Steelers in the wild-card round was traded to the New York Jets for some cash and a mid-round draft pick.
Tebow’s first New York media conference, the largest in Jets history, was held in the Jets’ field house due to the sheer mass of journalists wanting in on the action (espn.com). Curiously, as did the Broncos with Kyle Orton, the Jets currently have a once well-regarded starting quarterback in Mark Sanchez who is prone to bouts of inconsistency and long scoring droughts (nfl.com). Expect the Tebow chants to begin early in New York, and not to end until he supplants the “Sanchize” as the Jets’ starting passer.
