The year is 2007, the peak of Disney Channel’s grip on tweendom, thanks to the roaring success of High School Musical and Hannah Montana. The latest development in the media epidemic is the announcement that HSM cover boy Zac Efron has scored the Kevin Bacon-established role of Ren McCormack in an upcoming remake of the 1984 pop culture classic Footloose. Eventually, the at times-raunchy musical slowly but surely seemed to become more sanitized as Efron’s director in the Disney fifteen-minutes-of-famer, Kenny Ortega, helmed the remake. Eventually, both of the house of mouse connections were cut off from preproduction, moving in a direction that saw a virtually-unknown professional dancer being cast as Ren, and Black Snake Moan director Craig Brewer at the wheel. In the end, the best thing the 2.0 version of Footloose did for itself was wait until society could define the word “hipster.”
