This year’s International Education Week kicked off with the Global Quiz Bowl, where teams of three students competed against other groups for a chance to win a year of bragging rights. The competition tested the breadth and depth of the contestants’ knowledge of the world through numerous rounds of global trivia questions.
On the second day of International Education Week, several speakers came in to talk to the students about a wide variety of topics, from Sally Wiggins’ life adventures to Human Trafficking around the world.
For those students who were inspired to take action after hearing the speakers, the third day of International Education Week was action day. Students had the opportunity to come down to the lobby by the theater and participate in a variety of activities to do something about the issues that had been spoken about by the speakers the day prior.
The three main ways students could participate were by writing letters to free political prisoners, signing a pledge to end domestic violence, and learning about how to support the Peace Corps.
“We’ve had great participation and students are interested in many of these campaigns,” said Ms. Chothani. This action day will most likely be continued in the future as a result of the student interest and cooperation.
The fourth day of International Education Week was simulation day for the IB students at the high school. A group of students from Obama High School came to USCHS to participate in a simulated border dispute over a temple in Southern Asia. The students were assigned to groups, which each represented a country or organization involved in the dispute. As the simulation went on, the two student leaders introduced various scenarios that affected the decisions of the groups.
And finally on the fifth day of International Education Week, the student body had the opportunity to perform in an international talent show. During the lunch mods, students displayed their talents, whose origins are spread around the globe. From Chinese Yo-Yos to Russian concertos, the students showed that they are a talented group indeed.
