Upper St. Clair students rang in winter break with an appropriate celebration sponsored by the high school’s Make A Wish Club. The basketball competition was fierce during mods 3-14 on Tuesday, December 23rd at the Holiday Hoops tournament.
“I’m happy to be playing in the tournament. I love basketball, and it’s for a good cause,” shares sophomore Alex Yerina, who played on a team with his twin brother, Steven.
To participate in the event, interested high school students signed up in teams of three or four players and paid a fee of eight dollars. About fifty teams were placed in three brackets: co-ed, girls, and boys.
Michael Piroli, a senior, discloses, “The Holiday Hoops tournament is a fun event that has made my last year of high school even more memorable. Team Piroli has put in some good work, and we won’t go down without a fight!”
The winning co-ed team included Diandra Conwell, Ally Steve, Kevin Chrissis and Jackson Sandusky. Kaedryn Keller, Katie Guzzi, Hannah Shephard, and Bri Murgi were the winning members from the girls’ bracket, and Will Erlanger, Jesse Slinger, Marcus Galie and Danny Trocano were the winners of the boys’ bracket. In addition to bragging rights, these champion teams were awarded Chipotle gift cards.
Alex Ioli, sophomore, anticipates success in the upcoming tournaments: “I had a lot of fun raising money and playing with my friends in this year’s Holiday Hoops. I can’t wait to dominate next year!”
“I thought it was fun! It was a nice thing to do around the holiday season and I know a lot of kids enjoyed participating in it! My friends and I definitely did and we had a good time playing together and having some fun,” says Paige Borst, a junior.
The money collected from the event added up to nearly $1500 and will be donated to the Make A Wish organization to help grant wishes to children in the program.
Junior Kara Giselson is the USC Make A Wish club president who put a lot of time and effort into the organization of the event. “Next year we’re hoping to make $2000 with more teams. However, this was our first year doing it without another club, so we actually beat our expectations for this year because we raised even more than last year!”
Overall, the event was a huge success. Players, better brush up your basketball for next year.
