On Thursday, September 18, Boyce Middle School hosted its annual Open House. Teachers had the opportunity to show the parents what being in class is like, parents had the opportunity to get to know their children’s teachers, and the children had the opportunity to show off how they are doing in school so far.
Walking around Boyce Middle School, one can see the artwork prepared by the students hanging up on lockers, walls, and windows. The teachers all have presentations at the ready to give parents a glimpse into what a school day looks like to their child.
Mr. Clark, a sixth grade math and science teacher, said about his preparation for Open House, “Well, I get lots of sleep, I go home, eat a good dinner, take a shower, and come right back to school.”
The most amusing aspect of Open House would have to be the confused look on the faces of parents when trying to navigate the building to find their child’s classroom. But, nevertheless, they all seem to find their way with a little help from the aides and various other officials in the hallways helping to direct traffic.
Despite the confusion of navigating a foreign building, the parents of these students would not miss this important night for the world. Renee Marasco, mother of a fifth grader, said she goes to Open House “to get familiar with the school and meet the teachers and see how my daughter is doing.”
As each year passes, teachers meet and get to know more students who present, strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between. The characteristics of these children may change, but some things will always stay the same when it comes to children of the ages ten to twelve. Mrs. Harris, a fifth grade English teacher, noted the similarities she sees between her students now and her students of the past, “Kids will be kids, the same excuses for missing homework still pop up, and I think that they still gravitate toward students they grew up.”
The fact that the teachers have a night of this kind just shows how dedicated they are to their jobs and how much they are willing to go the extra mile to see their students succeed.
Kim Damon, mother of a sixth grader, commented, “I love the dedicated staff; the teachers are always willing to work with us, and I love the opportunities it provides my kids.”
