For the first time in Upper St. Clair history, a book club has been made available for students to join. The first meeting took place on Tuesday, September 14th in Room 117 at 2:30 after school. It served as an introduction and information
session to gather members’ names and emails and to let everyone know what to expect from upcoming discussions in future meetings.
The idea is to start up a book club for fellow readers to interact with one another by discussing favorite books. Not only will discussion take place, but every member will read the same book out of the club, then come together each meeting to socialize and add their own opinions of the book. A usually solo activity provides an opportunity for new friendships. Best of all, every member has the same interest: a passion for reading!
As the perfect place to meet new people who enjoy reading, the goal of the club is have students think of reading as desirable and fascinating, rather than boring and dull. All grades are strongly urged to attend. Regardless of age, each member will be able to voice his or her own opinion on the current book that is in discussion and suggest the next title that will be read. After all suggestions are offered, members will vote for the option that sounds the most intriguing. The
book with the most votes will act as the next book that will be discussed.
The sponsor of the club, English teacher Ms. Klingler, describes the club as “a great opportunity for students to choose books they really want to read, instead of being restricted only to the books read in English class.”
A member of the book club, Elizabeth MacLean, says, “The club offers us a chance to expand our reading horizons and discover new books to enjoy.”
The club hopes to obtain sponsor funds from an academic school department so that the members will not need to pay for everybook from their own bank accounts. If anyone is interested in reading and making new friends with the same passion, then come to the next Panther Book Club meeting. The club meets every other Wednesday after school in the library. Hope to see you there!
